At the tip Southern Florida, the coastal and backwaters are truly an angler’s paradise! Stretching along the Gulf of Mexico from Cape Romano to Cape Sable and East to Barnes Sound on Florida’s southernmost mainland tip and bordered by the Florida Keys, there are over ninety miles of pristine, uninhabited, unparalleled, labyrinths of coastal keys, estuaries, shoals, oyster beds, backwater bays, mangrove islands and freshwater creeks teeming with rich nutrients, aquatic life, and more important, great fishing.
Starting in the late spring, fueled by abundant rains (60 inches/year) over the grassland and marsh ecosystems in Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve, 10,000 Islands National Wildlife Refuge, Big Cypress National Preserve, and over 5,000 square miles in Everglades National Park, the area becomes a nursery to billions of tiny shrimp, crabs, and crustaceans. These nurseries attract a variety of backwater southwest Florida gamefish including Snook, Redfish, Spotted Trout, and Tarpon. These backwaters are also permanent homes to Red Drum, Sheepshead, Mangrove Snapper, and Ladyfish. During the summer and fall months, the coastal shoreline, white sand beaches, outer keys and passes, are awash with massive concentrations of thredfin herring, finger mullet, scale sardines, and glass minnows. Diving birds and surface agitation indicate “hot” action as schools of Spanish Mackerel, Jack Crevalle, Spotted Trout, Snook, Tarpon, Permit, and Pompano drive the baits into a frenzy.
From dawn to dusk in this serene wilderness far from roads and the urban ruckus, accessible only by shallow water skiffs, kayaks, and canoes, encounters with ibis, osprey, white and blue heron, egrets, and roseate spoonbills will enrich your day in the Glades. Whether you are a seasoned fly-fisherman, spin caster, or avid light-tackle angler, I invite you to book a charter with me and enjoy this truly unique Everglades and Florida Bay world class backcountry fishing adventure.
This boat is huge for a flats boat yet is regularly at home in water of less than 8 inches. It has huge forward and rear casting platforms, very stable and safe, modern electronics, and is our go-to flats boat. It’s also just right for quick trips to the near-shore reefs.
This brand new 2018, Carolina Skiff DLV 198 boat provides greater comfort on our Full Day backcountry charters and routinely explores All of the backcountry. Shallow draft, powerful Suzuki and the ability to carry a full variety of tackle make this boat ideal for targeting multiple species, and making the full day, long runs to Florida Bay.
Yes, it's much bigger than those skinny water skiffs, but it takes on the skinny water just as fine. And when I'm out deep in the backcountry, I really like having as big of a platform as I can float in those shallow waters.
Welcome to a special corner of paradise and to some of the finest backcountry and flats fishing you’ll ever encounter. Besides being inspired by the natural beauty of the Glades and 10,000 Islands, you’ll be awed by the variety of species just waiting to strike, whether fly fishing, using live bait, or on artificial lures. Over ninety miles of shallow water flats, passes, expansive bays, and mangrove keys provide the perfect environment to target many different species and an experience you’ll never forget.
